From The Bride…Josh and I met at work in a law firm. We both started as criminal defense attorneys at around the same time, about eight years ago. But we did not meet until about three years in, when we both got transferred to the same courthouse in downtown LA. We got assigned to the same busy courtroom where we had a lot of cases each day, but things moved really slowly. So, we had time to talk and get to know each other. Before long, we started dating. And even as we got assigned to work in different courtrooms, we still worked in the same courthouse. And still do, to this day. Our offices are just a hallway apart. A lot of people ask us if it gets to be a bit much, spending that much time together–working together and then going home together. We just smile, and try to explain as best as we can.
It is great having your favorite person be a constant support, whether it be at work or at home. I so love being as much a part of his day, his cases, his stresses, and his successes, as he is mine. This is how we met, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
I am a very organized person, and pay attention to detail, so I thought planning a wedding would come naturally to me. How wrong I was. I had never been one of those girls who had always dreamed of her wedding, planning every detail out years before Josh even entered the picture. So, I learned very quickly that I had to make decisions about things I had no opinion about. My mom, sister, and I looked at countless venues, because how was I to know where we should get married? But when we got to the end of the long, windy road that led to a pale yellow ranch house atop the rolling hills of the Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, I knew we had found the perfect spot. It was so peaceful, with breathtaking views, wheat fields, and greenery everywhere.
Once I found the location, the rest of the details just fell into place. I really wanted to let the natural beauty of the outdoor setting speak for itself and most design decisions flowed from there. What we wanted most for our wedding was to create a garden party that felt really intimate where we could catch up with friends and family and celebrate together. Rustic vintage furniture with wine barrels and wooden farmhouse doors as tables, vintage chairs, ottomans, luggage, old books, and a beautiful chandelier helped create the vibe we wanted for the night. Rustic lemonade stands with mason jars and a vintage cupcake dessert bar rounded out the look. We had lawn games for people to play and served BBQ (one of our favorites) because we wanted the night to feel laid-back and comfortable, and for guests to just have fun. Flowers were really important to me because I wanted to complement the already beautiful ranch house setting with beautiful and tasteful natural flower arrangements that matched the sage green, yellow, white, peach, and orange color scheme.
One of my favorite elements were the individually potted succulents that doubled as place card holders and favors for guests to take home and plant in their own gardens. Josh is a big music guy and he spent months creating the perfect list of songs to be played at the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. AC/DC, Grateful Dead, Sam Cooke, Velvet Underground, ELO, Prince, and Otis Redding were essentials.
Even though I didn’t know how to articulate exactly what I envisioned for our wedding night, looking back on our beautiful pictures that captured all the priceless moments, I know we got every detail just right. Especially the happily ever after.
